H.E.A.R.T. PROGRAM Housing, Entrepreneurship And Readiness Training The H.E.A.R.T. Program was started by parents of adults with developmental disabilities who were concerned about the lack of options for their adult children after high school. They formed a non-profit 501-c-3 organization in 2002, and in 2006 they opened their doors to the first H.E.A.R.T. “Trainee.” Now, in 2008, H.E.A.R.T. has over 50 trainees, employs 30 adults with developmental disabilities in concessions stands and vending machines throughout Houston, and is continuing to grow.
H.E.A.R.T. provides education in a classroom setting taught by special education certified teachers and aides. H.E.A.R.T. also provides job training focusing on vending machines and concessions. “Trainees” learn how to sort coins, count money, prepare deposit slips, conduct inventory, identify and sort products, learn customer service, and much more. What makes H.E.A.R.T. truly different from other programs is that H.E.A.R.T. goes the next step and provides jobs to its participants. All participants are paid at least minimum wage for the hours they work and the hours they are not working, they can get additional training through this program.
The best part is: H.E.A.R.T. is free and there is currently no waiting list. Because of grant funding that has been made available to the program, there is currently no cost for participants or their families. And – they take home paychecks. H.E.A.R.T. gives our family members the chance to have what we all have as adults – the chance to have a job, learn a job, and earn a paycheck for a job well done. All work is supervised and all training is conducted by certified teachers and aides under the supervision of a Ph.D level program manager.
